Cooley's Reel is one of the most celebrated Irish reels in the modern traditional repertoire. Unlike many very old tunes of unknown authorship, this one is attributed to accordion player Joe Cooley, a towering figure in 20th-century Irish traditional music. The tune is said to have been composed or popularised by him in the 1940s–1950s, before becoming an essential session standard.

The general public rarely knows Cooley's Reel by name, but most have already heard its melody at Celtic concerts, Irish pubs, dance shows or on traditional music compilations. Its immediate energy, clear phrases and driving rhythm make it a particularly accessible and much-loved reel.

In Irish sessions, Cooley's Reel is an absolute classic. It is played on fiddle, flute, tin whistle, accordion, banjo, guitar, mandolin and uilleann pipes. It is often one of the first reels learned by musicians, combining melodic effectiveness with sheer playing pleasure. It is frequently paired with other iconic reels such as The Silver Spear or The Wise Maid.

In larger Celtic ensembles, the tune adapts perfectly to bagpipes and orchestrated line-ups. Some bagadoù incorporate it into Irish-inspired suites, where bombardes, bagpipes and percussion give it a more powerful colour while preserving its dancing character. Thanks to its solid structure and natural momentum, it works equally well in an intimate session or on a large stage.
