About Scoroù
Online score editor using ABC notation
Genesis of the project
This editor was developed by Julien Appert, a bagpipe player from the Lorient area.
As a piper in a bagad, I quickly noticed how much of a challenge managing and exchanging scores could be. Moreover, it is not always easy for a beginner to grasp all the rhythmic subtleties just by reading sheet music.
I needed a simple, online tool capable of playing scores. That's how I discovered ABC notation and all its possibilities.
As a developer by trade, all that was left was to put my ideas into practice!
The project
This tool is an online score editor, centred on ABC notation and designed specifically for the needs of pipers. It allows you to enter, edit, listen to, and share traditional music scores, whether from the Scottish Highland repertoire or Breton music.
Features
- ABC editor with real-time syntax highlighting
- Graphical score rendering (abcjs)
- MIDI audio playback with note tracking
- Drone synthesiser (low A 110 Hz + tenors 220 Hz)
- Ornament timing correction for natural playback
- Bagpipe ornament auto-completion
- Support for Scottish (K:HP) and Breton (K:Cmin) key signatures
- Library management: public and private scores
- Sharing via link, email, WhatsApp, Telegram…
- PDF export and printing
Technologies
Score rendering is handled by abcjs, the reference open-source library for ABC notation in the browser. Drones are synthesised via the Web Audio API, independently of MIDI playback. The backend is built on PHP/SQLite running on Apache.
